League: Oxford University 10 - 5 Spencer 3's

The old and young from the Spencer 3’s took on the Oxford students and rallied after a poor start to tie the game 5-5 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Alas Oxford Uni had a near perfect final 20 minutes, removing errors from their game, while Spencer, whilst still playing well, just could not find the back of the net. A 5-0 final quarter from the students was a bitter blow after a great 3rd quarter.

The 1st quarter was all Oxford. The Spencer defense was all over the place and Oxford found time and space in front of goal far too frequently. The single Spencer goal was well taken but everyone needed to concentrate on their opponent’s movement and get more physical rather than looking for the stick check. The quarter finished 4-1 to Oxford.

Spencer found their defensive feet in the 2nd quarter, conceding only once, but also only scoring once despite having great periods of possession and scoring opportunities.

It all changed in the 3rd with three unanswered Spencer goals and a catalogue of Oxford errors. The student were rattled and Spencer’s tails were up. The last thing we wanted was 3/4 quarter time and Oxford to re-group. The game plan for the final period was simple but before we knew it, Oxford had a one, two, then three goal lead.

The season is not over yet but avoiding relegation is now a lot tougher, but not impossible, with four games to go.
