Spencer Lacrosse London

London's premiere lacrosse club for players of all abilities

Spencer Results - 20th Jan

With so many dominant performances across the club this year this weekend's set of results were somewhat against the grain. 2 wins and 2 losses may be statistically what you'd expect each weekend, but not here at Spencer!

Hillcroft 7 - 8 Spencer

This week's nailbiter took place in murky weather at Tooting and Mitcham FC, the stadium looming over the floodlit astroturf as London's top two lacrosse clubs butted heads.

Coach Tom Leahy on the game:

In terms of the result we are pleased to have secured the win and points.

It was a high tempo game and i am pleased with the graft of the team, especially the midfield.

As the score breakdown suggests, we lost concentration the last 20minutes and with some decisive calls going against us they were able to narrow the gap from 6 goals to 1.

We have a big game this weekend against Cardiff & then Hampsted the following week - with us learning a lot more from a close finish against Hillcroft than we would have learnt beating them comfortably this weekend.

Epsom 1 - 15 Spencer 2s

The twos travelled to Epsom where the groundsman had kept the pitch playable by superbly scoring the grass diagonally like a roast gammon. Chief interceptor and captain Felix Bull:

After last week's hard fought win the 2s carried momentum into an emphatic victory over epsom. Special note to Ed Shee who stepped into the attack getting himself 6 goals and 6 assists, and to Josh Dodd who dominated the face.

Spencer 3s 4 - 10 Oxford

Captain "Moose":

In drenched conditions, the Spencer 3s team faced a well-drilled and determined Oxford University side. After level pegging the first quarter at 2-2, Oxford began to pull away with continued possession play taking it’s toll on the Sparrows. Despite a late fight-back from Spencer, Oxford’s lead was too great - taking the game 10-4. Special mention to Kohei Hattori with a great first game for the 3s and a well-earned Man of the Match performance.

Spencer 4s 2 - 16 Hitchin A

Our second match of 2018 was regrettably our first loss of the season and a bitter disappointment to the team after such a strong start. The wet weather didn’t help and the absence of a ref meant that co-captain Mike Cooper took on the job of keeping the peace between the Earlsfield Sparrows and the Orangemen of Hitchin. We had a quite different line up to the one that won 16-0 against Hitchin A in October, but a new defence without Mike, Kohei, Tom or Hazy also contributed to the flow of goals against us.

A strong first quarter by Hitchin saw 7 unanswered goals. With a change of goal keepers for Spencer in the 2nd Quarter things settled down a bit with strong performance by Seb between the pipes. Huw and Cosmo battled through to make inroads to the opponents' crease and John Dodd also grabbed a sneaky goal in the 2nd quarter. This match also saw the welcome return of Welsh wonder Stevie Schumacher from an 8 year absence at Spencer. We look forward to our next match against Oxford 2s away which we also need to win to stay top of the league.

Thanks to captain Kees for the match report and captain Mike for filling in as referee.
